ADULT AUTISM

Understand Yourself with Clarity and Care

Do I have Austism?

Autism often goes unrecognised in adults, especially those who have developed coping strategies like masking or high achievement in certain areas. Many people don’t realise that autism can present differently from the stereotypes, especially in women and marginalised groups.

Meet Our Consultant Adults Psychiatrists

“Autism often goes unseen in adulthood, especially when someone has spent years adapting to fit in. A diagnosis isn’t about limitation — it’s about understanding yourself with compassion, and giving yourself permission to live in a way that feels right for you..”

What happens in an Austism Assessment?

Your adult autism assessment takes place online with one of our specialist psychiatrists. Before your appointment, you’ll complete some questionnaires to help us understand your experiences. During the session, we’ll explore your development, sensory preferences, communication style, routines, interests, and any challenges you’ve faced across work, relationships, and everyday life.

The process is relaxed, respectful, and designed to help you feel heard. We take into account how autism presents differently in adults — especially if you’ve been masking for years. If autism is diagnosed, you’ll receive a written report and personalised guidance on next steps, including support options that align with your needs and preferences.

Treatment and Support for Adult Autism

An autism diagnosis is just the beginning — the right support can help you understand yourself better, reduce stress, and live more comfortably in a world that often isn’t designed with neurodivergent minds in mind.

While autism itself doesn’t require “treatment,” many people benefit from services that help them manage overwhelm, improve wellbeing, and build a life that works for them. This might include:

  • Talking therapy to explore identity, anxiety, masking, or burnout

  • Autism-informed CBT to support emotional regulation and reduce stress

  • Nutritional therapy to support gut health, energy and sensory needs

  • Fitness training tailored to neurodivergent bodies and nervous systems

  • Medication where appropriate, for co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, or sleep difficulties

We also help you understand workplace accommodations, communication strategies, and self-advocacy tools. Whether you're newly diagnosed or simply seeking better support, we’re here to walk alongside you

We Follow NICE Guidelines and Are CQC Registered

All our autism assessments for adults follow the latest NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines, so you can trust that your care is safe, evidence-based, and aligned with national standards.

Your assessment includes a full psychiatric interview, use of recognised diagnostic tools (such as the ADOS-2 or equivalent screening measures), and a careful look at any co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression, or sensory processing differences. We also explore how your experiences have evolved from childhood to adulthood, with sensitivity to masking and late recognition.

Matter of Health is fully CQC registered, meaning we meet the national standards for quality, safety, and compassionate, person-centred care. You're in experienced and regulated hands every step of the way.

FAQs

  • An adult autism assessment is a structured process led by a specialist psychiatrist to explore whether you are autistic. It includes a clinical interview, questionnaires, and a review of your developmental history, communication style, sensory preferences, and daily experiences. It’s designed to help you better understand yourself and whether autism is part of your neurodivergent profile.

Common signs include sensory sensitivities, social fatigue, difficulty with change, intense interests, or masking behaviours. If you've ever felt overwhelmed in social situations or struggled to make sense of how others relate, you may benefit from a private autism assessment.
