What Happens in a Child Autism Assessment?

Understanding your child's needs clearly, not just assigning a label.

An autism assessment at Matter of Health is a thorough, multi-stage process designed to build a complete picture of your child. We never ask families to commit to the full assessment upfront — we start with an initial psychiatric consultation so our clinician can get to know your child first and confirm that an autism assessment is the right path forward.

Step 1 — Initial Psychiatric Consultation (£475)

Your journey begins with a 1:1 consultation with one of our consultant psychiatrists. They will explore your child's development, behaviour, and history in depth. This session alone can provide valuable insight and recommendations. If autism is indicated, we will discuss next steps and proceed to the full assessment. If it is not indicated, you will receive a clinical report and personalised recommendations — with no further obligation.

Step 2 — ADIR (Autism Diagnostic Interview Revised)

A specialist ASD practitioner conducts an in-depth structured interview with parents and caregivers online, exploring your child's development and behaviour in detail. A clinical report is produced and shared with your psychiatrist.

Step 3 — ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule)

Your child meets in person with a specialist ASD practitioner for a structured observational assessment — the gold standard tool for autism diagnosis. A clinical report is produced and shared with your psychiatrist.

Step 4 — MDT Review & Feedback Session

Before your feedback session, all clinicians involved in your child's assessment meet to discuss findings as a multidisciplinary team (MDT). You then meet with your psychiatrist who will walk you through everything — the diagnosis (if given), key findings, and practical recommendations for home and school. A full written report is provided.

The full assessment can typically be completed within 2–4 weeks, with no waiting list — so you can get started as soon as you're ready.

Common Signs of Autism in Children & Adolescents

Children and adolescents with autism may show some of the following signs:

Social Communication

  • Difficulty understanding social cues or unwritten rules

  • Struggles with back-and-forth conversation

  • Takes language very literally or misses sarcasm and humour

Behaviour and Routine

  • Strong need for routine and predictability

  • Repetitive behaviours or movements

  • Intense, focused interests in specific topics

Sensory and Emotional

  • Over or under sensitivity to noise, light, touch or texture

  • Difficulty managing emotions or unexpected changes

  • Finds busy or social environments overwhelming

Every child's experience of autism is unique. Some children show several of these signs, while others present very differently. A professional autism assessment can clarify what's driving your child's challenges and help you plan the right support at home and school.

Unsure if your child has ASD?

Treatment and Support for ADHD in Children & Adolsecents

With the right support, ADHD can be understood, managed, and transformed into confidence and wellbeing.

ADHD treatment is tailored to each child’s needs. For some, medication may improve focus and reduce impulsivity, while for others, therapy and skill‑building are the most effective approaches. At Matter of Health, our specialists guide families through safe and evidence‑based options.

Beyond medication, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), ADHD coaching, and talking therapies can help children develop emotional regulation, organisation, and resilience. Nutritional and lifestyle guidance can further support mood, energy, and overall wellbeing — helping your child flourish at home and at school.

Together, we can help your child succeed with ADHD — supported by our expert team.

FAQs

  • Our process begins with an initial psychiatric consultation at £475. This first step is intentionally separate — our clinician gets to know your child properly before any further commitment. If the full assessment is recommended, it will cost a further £1375. There are no hidden fees and no obligation after Step 1.

  • Yes. You can self-refer directly to Matter of Health — no GP referral is needed. Simply contact us to arrange your child's initial consultation and we will guide you through the process from there.

  • Yes. A diagnosis issued by qualified clinicians following recognised guidelines is accepted by schools, local authorities, and support services across the UK. Our written report is specifically designed to support applications for SEND provision, Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans, and onward referrals to specialist services.

  • Yes — ASD and ADHD are distinct conditions but they frequently co-occur. If our clinician identifies signs of both during your child's assessment, we can discuss a combined assessment. Getting a full picture of your child's neurodevelopmental profile leads to more accurate support at home and school.

  • Yes. All of our assessments follow NICE guidelines for autism in children and young people. This ensures a rigorous, evidence-based process that meets national clinical standards and produces a report that is recognised and accepted across education, health, and social care services.

  • Yes — Matter of Health is fully CQC registered. This means our clinic meets the nationally recognised standards set by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for quality, safety, and patient-centred care.

This report can be submitted directly in support of an EHC plan application and shared with your child's school, GP, or any relevant specialist services.

  • Yes. Choosing a private assessment has no impact on your NHS referral or your position on the waiting list. In many parts of the UK, NHS waiting times for children currently exceed 12 months — often significantly longer. A private assessment means your child can get answers and access support much sooner, without giving up your NHS place.

  • We assess children and adolescents from age 4 to 18. If you are unsure whether your child is ready for a formal assessment, our initial psychiatric consultation is a good first step — our clinician can advise you on the most appropriate next steps for your child's age and presentation.
